The objective of the project is the upgrade, maintenance, improvement of operational performance, and restoration—where required—of the infrastructure of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA), in order to ensure its full rehabilitation, upgrade its facilities, reduce operating costs, and provide a safe, functional, efficient, and sustainable environment that supports urban sports, culture, and recreational activities. The project is financed by resources from the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA) is one of the most comprehensive public sports complexes in Europe. The Main Olympic Stadium was designed in 1979 and inaugurated in 1982 to host the European Athletics Championships. Ahead of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the Sports Complex was redesigned and expanded to accommodate the necessary sports venues.
The renovation and upgrading of the facilities are considered essential to ensure that OAKA and its operations contribute to reducing the environmental footprint and transforming it into a modern sports hub that promotes athletic activities and enhances the urban area in which it is located.
The main components of the project are as follows:
- Inspection and maintenance/repair/replacement of the metal structures and polycarbonate panels of the facility roofs.
- Maintenance, repair, and replacement of parts of the metal structures at the entrances, the marketplace, and the Wall of Nations.
- Structural and functional restoration of the two iconic “Calatrava” roofs.
- Final Design, Implementation Study, and Execution of Targeted Structural Restoration Works for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the surrounding area and associated building facilities.
- Maintenance, upgrading, and works that contribute to energy savings in the relevant buildings and surrounding spaces.
- Study on the sustainable development and utilization of existing facilities.
- Structural restorations and reinforcements of the swimming pools.
- Maintenance, repair, and restoration of the Velodrome.
The project is implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, with a total budget of €110 million.
