Project Description
The project titled “Healthcare Infrastructure – National Health System: Renovation and Upgrade of Hospital Facilities” concerns the expansion, modernization, and functional and energy upgrade of the building infrastructure of more than 90 hospitals across the seven Health Regions of Greece. It also includes the construction of a Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy Center, the renovation of part of Building 300 (Male Wing) at the General Hospital for Chest Diseases “I Sotiria”, and the construction of a new building to house the Cell and Gene Therapy Laboratories and the Hematology Clinic at the Papageorgiou General Hospital of Thessaloniki.
Through this project, the National Secondary Healthcare System will be reorganized and upgraded, resulting in improved resilience, as well as enhanced quality and effectiveness of healthcare services provided to citizens.
The planned interventions include, but are not limited to:
- Construction of new buildings.
- Replacement of electromechanical (E/M) installations.
- Replacement of medical gas networks.
- Installation of fire detection and fire suppression systems.
- Landscaping and upgrade of outdoor areas.
- Structural reinforcements and general construction work.
All interventions are carried out in accordance with new international standards and are aligned with European Union guidelines.
Funding – Project Progress
Growthfund’s Project Preparation Facility (PPF) has undertaken the preparation and conduct of the tendering procedures, and the monitoring of its implementation until completion.
As part of this effort, PPF has initiated and conducted 104 tendering procedures, with a total budget of €288 million (excluding VAT), resulting in the signing of 86 contracts amounting to €244 million.
The project is being implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
Communication Campaign for the Promotion of the Programme
The programme also includes the project titled “Communication and Promotion of the Ministry of Health’s actions for the upgrade of the National Health System (NHS) funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility”, with a budget of €2.3 million.
The objective of the project is to inform, publicize, and promote the strategy and overall planning for the modernization of the NHS, as well as the key projects being implemented under the Ministry of Health’s three main actions:
- RRF 16795: Renovation and modernization of hospitals across Greece
- RRF 16757: Establishment of a Radiotherapy Center at Sotiria Hospital
- RRF 16793: New infrastructure for laboratories at Papageorgiou General Hospital of Thessaloniki
Additionally, the scope of this project includes all actions and initiatives that are closely linked to the upgrade and modernization of the NHS, contributing to the improved quality and efficiency of healthcare services provided to patients.
